MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The focus on fundamental development has been evident in the early days of West Virginia's 2023 fall football practices, and that has involved more than just base work on alignment and positioning. Assembling those items, and stringing them together to produce a solid rep from start to finish, is the next step in the process that the coaches are hoping results in more wins this season.
Those are evident in these practice reps from the first days of fall drills. In the first two clips, Mountaineer defenders drop into coverage, follow ball movement and reach a rally point, then finish off with an interception and a return. Footwork, alignment and drop techniques are all part of this drill.
This tackling drill includes not only wrap and drive work, but also the ability to locate the ball quickly and get into proper position to make a stop. Defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley is also a stickler for getting the head up and in the proper position to avoid a penalty or the potential for injury.
There's still plenty of old school work to be seen, too. Hitting the sled is always a feature of line practice, but it's not just blasting away. Hand position, balance and keeping the feet moving and legs driving are also big parts of this work.
