When the Big 12 Conference added Colorado to its membership just a few days ago, the league issued an understated, yet strong two-word tweet: "We're back".
By that standard, the revitalized conference was positively loquacious in announcing the admission of Arizona, Arizona State and Utah to its membership rolls, which will result in a 16-team group in the 2024-25 season.
The change in membership concluded in what was lightning speed after months of speculation, hints, misdirection and the like over the collegiate landscape. Arizona was approved to the league on Thursday night, while Arizona and Utah were voted in on Friday evening. All of those votes were unanimous, putting the formal stamp on the 'Yes, we want in' and 'Yes, we'll take you' process that takes place before the final approval.
The Big 12 Board of Directors has voted unanimously to admit Arizona State University, University of Arizona, and University of Utah to the Big 12 Conference.
“We are thrilled to welcome Arizona, Arizona State and Utah to the Big 12,” said Commissioner Brett Yormark in a prepared statement. “The Conference is gaining three premier institutions both academically and athletically, and the entire Big 12 looks forward to working alongside their presidents, athletic directors, student-athletes and administrators.”
Beginning with the 2024-25 academic year, the Big 12 Conference will be comprised of 16 members - Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Colorado, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, Utah and West Virginia.
Next to be sorted out are issues such as future scheduling, a possible return to divisional play and many more of the logistics attendant to adding so many new schools to the league.
The new additions are all expected to be full share payment members of the league, as the Big 12's recently re-done media contract specified full payouts to any Power 5 school which joined the conference membership.
