Herbert Hoover High School’s football team in Falling Rock, West Virginia, had a remarkable season last year, winning ten consecutive games, including three postseason games on the road, to advance to the Super Six. The team’s victories at Clay County, Winfield, and Frankfort were particularly memorable, with the Huskies being considered underdogs in those matchups. Senior lineman Kole Johnson reflected on the experience, stating, “Being on the road, the experience and everything of going up to Wheeling, the Frankfort trip was probably my favorite going up there.”
Head coach Joey Fields attributed the team’s success to the coaching staff and the players’ dedication, stating, “Since I have been here, those past three teams we have gotten better as the season went on.” However, despite their accomplishments, Fields and the team veterans are focused on the present and determined to create their own story this year. Johnson emphasized, “That’s last year. This is our year. It is a different team. We are going to set our own story. It gives us a little bit of a boost but that was also last year and we want to set our own story this year.”
As Fields enters his fourth season as head coach, he is excited about the experienced offensive and defensive lines, which he believes are the most seasoned during his tenure. These lines will provide strong support for the team’s running backs, led by junior Rocco Frye, who rushed for over 1,000 yards and twelve touchdowns last season. Additionally, two-year starting quarterback Dane Hatfield will be returning to lead the Husky offense. Hatfield had an impressive performance last year, with 46 total touchdowns and over 3,000 yards of total offense.
The upcoming season holds a special significance for the Herbert Hoover team and community. Seven years after their community was devastated by flooding, the team will be playing their first games at the newly built Herbert Hoover High School. Senior lineman Zac Greer expressed his excitement, saying, “I haven’t been to a high school my entire life. That’s just something I don’t think any of us can wait for. It is going to be awesome.”
The team is eagerly looking forward to playing at the new school, with Johnson noting that pictures of the facility do not do it justice. Head coach Fields shared in the excitement, stating, “We’re excited. This community is excited. The school is excited and our staff and students. We are looking forward to getting home.”
To kick off the season at their new home, Herbert Hoover will host a scrimmage game against John Marshall High School on August 19. The scrimmage will be particularly special as country music artist and JMHS alumnus Brad Paisley is set to attend. The Huskies’ first regular season home game will be against Nitro, a Cardinal Conference rival, on September 8.
